Alright, we’re going to go a little off the wall with this one. In 2013, New Zealand singer Lorde released her debut album Pure Heroine. The single won Lorde Song of the Year at the Grammy’s. Praised for its simplicity and message, “Royals” launched Lorde into stardom and was number one on the Billboard charts for nine straight weeks. The music video is equally simple and features people doing mundane activities.
The story of “Royals” is interesting in and of itself. A collector of National Geographic, Lorde was inspired by a 1976 photo (above) of Kansas City Royals star George Brett signing autographs with Royals emblazoned across his chest. She wrote the song in about half an hour afterwards.
